The Truth About Animal Testing

No
one likes to talk about animal testing. That’s because many of the
products that we consume every day are tested on animals before they
are approved for human use, what makes matters worse is that these
tests are often cruel and may require the animal test subject to die.

If
the thought of helpless animals subjected to cruel tests and
experiments leaves you feeling bleak, you’re not alone. There is
something that you can do right now to put an end to animal testing.

What Is Animal Testing

Animal
testing is the use of “non-human animals” to test variables that
affect the behavior or biology of a subject. There are several
classifications of animal testing that are generally determined by
the nature of the test, how it is carried out and for what purpose.

  • Fundamental Research
  • Genetic Modification
  • Regulatory Testing
  • Cosmetics Tests

The biggest culprits of animal testing are the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Name-brands like:

  • L’Oreal
  • Estee Lauder
  • Procter & Gamble
  • Clorox
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • S.C. Johnson
  • Colgate-Palmolive
  • Reckitt Benckiser
  • Church & Dwight
  • Unilever
  • Henkel

Over
80% of the world still allows at least some form of animal testing
and there may even be a part of you that feels animal testing is
justified to advance medical and pharmaceutical sciences that save
human lives.

The
truth remains that animal testing is cruel, inhumane and unreliable
at best. In fact, according to Understanding
Animal Research
,
neurologist
Aysha Akhtar, MD, MPH states,

94% of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human clinical trials…over 100 stroke drugs that were effective when tested on animals have failed in humans, and over 85 HIV vaccines failed in humans after working well in non-human primates.”

What’s
more, animal testing is completely unnecessary, irresponsible and
expensive. Not only do safe and humane alternative tests and
experimental methods exist, but they are also often much less
expensive and more reliable than their counterparts.

Why Is It Cruel

Researchers
at name-brand corporations admit that animals are regularly subjected
to moderate to severe suffering as a part of the experiment, which is
the least offensive way to say that they regularly, and needlessly
torture animals.

Animal
testing has been proven to cause lasting pain, permanent suffering
and most often death to the animal subject. These tests often
include:

  • Injections and force feedings of potentially harmful substances
  • Lethal exposure to radiation
  • Vivisection and the surgical removal of animals organs and tissues to deliberately cause damage
  • Forced inhalation of toxic gases
  • Frightening animals and subjecting them to situations that induce anxiety and depression

Pharmaceutical
and medical research on animals is cruel enough, but this article
could hardly reveal the full extent of the cruelty exerted on animals
for cosmetic tests.

What You Can Do To Stop It

It’s
easy to see why so many people, animal rights activists and
organizations have backed efforts to end animal testing, and you can
be a part of the cause too.

Call
your
legislators and tell them that you support efforts to end animal
testing. Tell them that your vote depends on their support for
legislation that broadens the scope of the Animal Welfare Act.

Don’t
forget to lend all the support you can to your local shelter.
