Mission Statement

Our Mission

The National Humane Society is dedicated to protecting animals from suffering and improving their lives through compassionate action, education, advocacy and policy change. We believe every animal deserves love and safety, and we work every day to make that belief a reality.

We carry out our mission by:

  • Rescuing and Protecting Animals in Need
Providing lifesaving care, rehabilitation, and support to vulnerable animals, while working to ensure their long-term well-being and quality of life.
  • Advocating for Lasting Change
Confronting cruelty at its root through research, policy reform, and systemic advocacy, especially where animals face the greatest and most entrenched harm.
  • Educating and Empowering Communities
Helping people understand the issues animals face and encouraging responsible choices, including spaying and neutering, to prevent needless suffering and save lives.
  • Promoting Compassion and Respect
Leading with respect and compassion as we work alongside our partners, supporters, and communities to build a more humane future for the animals.

Together, we give animals a voice and work daily toward a world where animals are no longer abused or forgotten. Each year, spay and neuter programs help save millions of animals, yet far too many still lose their lives simply because there are not enough homes. Lasting change is only possible with the help of compassionate people who are willing to speak up and take action.
